The Sophia Society

Introducing the Sophia Society in Remembrance of Lucia Woods Lindley

In December 2020, we lost a pillar of the Chicago Foundation for Women community and one of CFW’s four Founding Mothers, Lucia Woods Lindley. Lucia’s radical commitment to funding women’s issues through her Sophia Fund (named for the Greek archetype of feminine wisdom) paved the way to establish CFW, ultimately filling a massive void in Chicago’s philanthropic landscape.

Never one to lack vision, she made thoughtful plans for CFW in the form of a testamentary donation – the largest in the Foundation’s history.

Lucia’s ten million dollar investment will help CFW turn the page to our next chapter as we demand and facilitate a pandemic recovery that centers those most deeply impacted.

In celebration of her life, CFW has named the Foundation’s planned giving society in her honor. The Sophia Society recognizes those who have chosen to leave a lasting charitable legacy with CFW by including the Foundation in their estate plan. Lucia’s gift will also inspire others’ investment in women and girls, just as she inspired so many in her lifetime.

The Sophia Society is composed of forward-thinking donors who have opted to make their core values known to future generations through a planned gift. Including a planned gift to CFW in your estate planning is an investment not only in the Foundation we know today – but in the Foundation we dream it will become.

“I've worked my entire life for opportunities and equality for ALL women. Putting CFW in my estate plans will continue my work and my beliefs. My heirs - my three daughters - support and applaud this decision.”
– Marcie Love, long-time CFW supporter, founder of Personal PAC, and Sophia Society Member
